My 10 year old female Chesapeake has always ‘leaked’ after her spay when she was about two years old. It was never really bad until this past summer when she was diagnosed with Kidney and Liver problems. It’s not failure, but the vet said they are straining to work properly. Now, I’m constantly screaming at her to keep her out of the water bowl and following after her around the house because she’s literally leaked the contents of her entire bladder. I know she can’t help it but it’s becoming hard to keep the house sanitary. I literally had to remove all of the carpet in our house in October because of her.
My aunt works at the vet we take her to and is the one that did the blood work and found out her kidneys and liver are straining. I’m waiting for a return call to ask about putting her on PROIN.
My question is, if anyone has had problems using the medication? I realize all dogs are different but I’m interested in hearing what others have to say that way I can closely monitor her and look for warning signs. Are there other medications? Between the cost and the unsanitary conditions behind it, and the risk of urine burn, I am NOT putting doggy diapers on her. I love my 85lb lap dog. I just want her to feel better. ={
I got my dog spayed for several reasons. One being that I did not want to risk pregnancy. I removed the risk of uterine cancer, among other cancers and illness. I have two other dogs. One being a un-neutered male.
I realize that the incontinence is not painful, but it’s unsanitary to the house. I do not crate my dogs and I’m not going to exile her to a room in the house just because of it. She doesn’t deserve it. If there is a medication out there that will help keep both of us happy, I want to be able to provide it for her.
Doggy diapers run the risk of UTIs and Urine burn.

I know of many dogs successfully treated with Proin. The side effects don’t appear usually to affect liver/kidney function, but primarily may cause hypertension, restless behaviors and excitability, sometimes aggressive behaviors. I realize what a difficult thing it is to have a large dog leaking urine all over the house, but given her kidneys have impaired functioning–she has to have access to her water bowl at all times. If your vet feels based on her organ function that Proin might be safe for her & could help, you can give it a try & repeat the testing in a month or whatever time frame the vet suggests,to make sure nothing has changed. This is something you’ll have to discuss with the vet, bring up any questions you have.
It may be that Proin isn’t recommended for her anyway, that the increased frequency in urination has more to do with her kidney function than spay incontinence. Good luck to you.

the medicine is probably not going to help and it has side effects that hurt the liver and kidneys. You can put diapers on her, it’s not an insult to her, just they can increase risks of UTIs. or you can keep her in a pen, or blocked off in a room when you can’t watch her, with newspaper on the floor. If her kidneys and liver are decreased functioning, NO IDEA why you’d put her on any unnecessary medication.. (incontinence is NOT painful at all)
