I have a soon to be 2 year old chihuahua who has an undiagnosed liver disease-(00 later). She started to develop bruising on her belly and what appeared to be bleeding into her tissues one day in a matter of hours. Platelets are 10,000- terribly low. Vet recommends prednisone for a couple of weeks, prednisone can cause many bad and some potentially permanent side effects and is especially rough on the liver so i am torn. And if her thrombocytopenia is not immune related, this is only going to make it worse. Of course we do not have a definitive diagnosis as to why her platelets are so low- but apparently this is the only option as a treatment.. SO, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with anything like this in their dog, I hate to think of her possibly bleeding to death, but the meds are making her so lethargic and sickly.
She was not showing ANY signs of discomfort at all- even when the bruising showed up. She still wanted to run and play and be precious. Now she’s lethargic from the prednisone. Do not insinuate that I would let her suffer. If she were, i would immediately put her down. Why the attitude anyway when I am asking sincerely for help? Thanks…

Did you get a health contract from your breeder? If not, you should at least try to contact your breeder and tell them what is going on with your dog. 2 is very young to be diagnosed with a disease like that.
I hope your dog gets over this illness. Just let the vets do their job, and hope for the best.

Why are you forcing the poor thing to linger & suffer?
Are you so besotted & selfish as to imagine that an animal will say "I’m SICK & TRYING TO DIE…LET ME GO"????

It seems to me that you only really have one chose, which is heart breaking, but by far kinder to the poor dog.
She is so young to have so much wrong, and she does not seem to have much quality of life.
I really feel for you, and hope you manage to make the right chose in the end for your pet and yourself.

assuming your dog has had clotting profiles done and is not a hemopheliac, I would try the pred. if you do nothing, your dog will die. if you try the pred, it might help. has your dog had a blood transfusion? that might buy you some time to figure out what’s wrong, but I would still try pred. prednisone does have negative side effects, but that is really only with long term use and the short amount of time your dog would need to use it to determine if it is helping shouldn’t cause any problems. if your dog has to be on it long term, the goal is to wean the animal down to the lowest effective dose to help avoid any side effects but sometimes you have to weigh the pros and cons. pros: your dog lives, but maybe has iatrogenic cushings from the pred. cons: your dog dies.

Poor dog, i think the best thing for you to do is to put it down. It will probably be one of the hardest things you will ever have to do but think about it. All doggies go to heaven so you would be sending her to a better place. Don’t put her through any more suffering.
