I have a 3-year-old, female, Australian Shepherd who was spayed as a puppy. The past couple of weeks, I’ve noticed that she is dripping and leaving puddles behind after laying down for a while. The liquid is clear and doesn’t have an odor, so at first I didn’t think it was urine. However, after doing some reading, I think it is urine. It seems rather strange that she would all of a sudden become incontinent when nothing has changed in her life such as diet, routine, water intake etc. I will take her to the vet, but thought it was unusual that this appears to have come from nowhere. If she was older or recently spayed, I could understand. Have any of you had similar experiences and do you have any recommendations? Don’t fret, if this continues, I will definitely take her to the vet.

Yep, had this experience with several b*tch’s. Your Vet will want to do an urinalysis to out-rule a UTI, and if that comes back clear, the Vet will put her on Proin or DES. Spay incontinence is a lifelong condition, and she will have to be on medication for her entire life in order to control this. This is VERY common.

Sounds like spay incontinence. This is a problem in 5-10% of dogs that were spayed as really young puppies ie under 8 months of age. The good news is that there is a treatment for it. The bad news is that it lasts the life of the dog. Hopefully she has a UTI instead.

Hopefully, it is just a UTI, but spay incontinence is not something the Neuter Police tell you about when advising you to have your baby puppy spayed – % is far higher than 5-10%.
If it is spay incontinence, as others have said, it is treatable but she will be on medication for her whole life.
