They are called opportunistic infections, because they arise when the opportunity presents itself with the individual’s diminished resistance, because of his/her compromised immune system.
This includes viral and bacterial infections, as well as cancer and also fungal infections.
All of us are normally exposed to these infections/organisms, but our bodies, when we’re healthy, can defend themselves with our immune systems.
