Hi~
i’m studying movie script for improving my english.
I’ve seen in the British movies,
one character said,
"Troy(character) would have loved to come tonight,
but thanks to the conspiracy of silence between the Catholic Church and the Tories in the face of Aids,
he can’t. Because he’s dead."
I can’t understand what relation Aids have with the Catholic Church and the Tories.
Could you tell me the culture or kind of that society?

That was the writer’s slap at the Catholic Church and the British Conservative Party. The writer was trying to shift the blame for the characters dying of AIDS on another entity that the one actually to blame. The writer obviously thinks that people who have multiple sex partners without protection is the innocent party, even though that person made the Choice to do so, so naturally someone else is to blame and it may as well be the entities (Church and State) that the writer hates.

I’m catholic and have been all my life and I have no idea what they would be talking about.
I wish I could help more but that really doesn’t make any sense.
I didn’t know that anyone even uses the term ‘Tories’ anymore either.
I would guess that they are maybe making a reference to the fact that the Catholic Church doesn’t support the use of condoms which, of course, is a defense against AIDS… but I just don’t know. Of course, since it’s a movie script, you never know if they are even basing it on anything factual.
Good luck with your english studies… I’m from the United States so I may be missing things since your reference is British.

It was insulting the Catholic Church and the Tories for not supporting condom use. Conservative organizations tend to support abstinence only programs and view programs that promote or issue condoms as promoting a loose life style. The implication is that if the person had had access to condoms and used them and felt it was right to do so, that he would not have gotten sick and died.
I can not speak about the policy of the Tories, but I can say that the Catholic Church has provided a lot of medical attention to those with Aids. Furthermore, the Catholic Church certainly had nothing to do with introducing or promoting the spread of the Aids virus.
