Yes, cold sores are caused by oral herpes (HSV1) you can get it on the mouth or genitally. Cold sores is just a nicer name for oral herpes. It’s commonly passed to the genitals when some one with a visible cold sore gives you oral sex. Oral herpes on the genitals is less sever to have then HSV2, it usually sheds about 2-3 percent of days out of the year. You only have a small chance of passing HSV1 when you don’t have a break out. You can even talk to your partners about using condoms when you don’t have a break out and to even further lower your chances of passing it you can take antiviral medication or suppressants. You should also inform your partners if you want to get intimate with them.
