We have adopted a lovely boy who is getting on a bit! He belongs to someone nearby, but he seemed mistreated and has decided he wants to live with us! He is missing a toe plus his front teeth, and a neighbour tells us he is 18 years old.
Apart from being a bit wobbly and old, he has become to be very loving and cuddly kitty and has a good appetite.
Since he arrived, he has been plagued with fleas. We have flea sprayed him and given him "spot on" treatment which seem to be working, but he has lots of itchy raw spots because he has chewed them, which then scab over. I’ve been bathing them and treating them with warm salt water and applying a gentle tea tree skin cream from the pet shop, but he’s still biting at them so they don’t seem to be getting better.
I don’t want to take him to the vet right away if there’s something we can do at home since he doesn’t actually belong to us, so does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you for your replies, I will try the olive oil since we’ve got it in the kitchen, and will try the others if we don’t have any luck – Murphy the kitty says thank you!

Our dog got patches of itchy, dry skin from having fleas. We found that shampooing him made it worse, but we didn’t want him to have fleas. Our friends told us to buy fish oil tablets (your drug store should have them) and give them to him wrapped up in cheese or any food. We did, and it helped his skin become less dry and itchy. We looked into websites as well that advertise a hydrating doggy shampoo. I’m sure they have the same stuff for cats. Have fun with your new friend.

Somebody on this site a few days ago suggested using olive oil to treat an itchy wound since the cat won’t get sick from ingesting it. Good luck and bless you for taking care of him.

i have found with some flea treatments they can irritate the skin what i use is wool mix from the laundry Ilise in the supermarket i would use sorbolene think like baby’s skin and treat it like baby’s skin cats will try them self to keep them self clean don’t cover just let the air get to them and keep them dry it takes a while about 2 – 3 weeks for it to clear up hope that helps
