Honestly, I believe there are two major reasons.
1. The introduction of video games and televisions in every room. As a result, children spend less time in active play, and more time sitting. Wii has done a great job to provide a way to make the participants in the video games more active, but our society has completely changed to where the norm is no longer bike riding and hours of baseball and tag. It is now time to get online, watch tv, or play video games. Also, children tend to snack on unhealthy food while sitting. Horrible combination.
2. Society has gotten more fast paced AND more households are forced to have both parents working. Instead of a mother being home to prepare each meal, often everything has to be done at the speed of light, so fast food is the easiest option. There’s no way to fix this problem because mothers and fathers both have to work now, other than to make healthier options for fast food, or perhaps prepare food the night before.
Society will see ahuge impact from these changes. Obesity related illnesses will be at a new high. In order to change, parents and schools need to start teaching children early about healthy snacking options, drinking water instead of soda, and being more active. Also, when I have children, I plan on limiting the amount of time my child can spend on any electronic source. They can choose an hour each night after diner and homework for any combination of tv, computer, or video games. And NO television in the bedroom.
Change has to begin somewhere…..

Well, one of the reasons for dramatic shift in children’s health is that parents aren’t feeding them properly. Without proper diet and exercise, a child’s immune system goes way down and doesn’t have what it needs to fight off what it should. Instead of getting the kids of America a proper 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruits, kids are getting a serving of processed fat on a bun from McDonalds. Not exactly healthy. In some parents defense, it is cheaper and easier. Why spend ten dollars at the grocery store and spend an hour preparing a meal at home, when you can swing through the drive through and pay a buck for fried growth hormones that are chicken nuggets?
If the kids of America would actually eat properly and just get twenty minutes of some kind of good walking or sports playing in a day, I can guarantee that the health of our children would sky rocket, eliminating several heart and respiratory disease, types of diabetes, even chance for liver failure. It would also help with simple things like a cold or the flu. Their body would be so much more able to fight off simple germs.
The effect that it has on society is overwhelming, too. If it wasn’t for our children being in poor health, we would shift our focus to things that had a more difficult solution like education, pre-natal health care for those who couldn’t afford it, how to better our country in significant ways like finances, so we’re not a country in debt, what to do about the Iraq situation, what we need to do to prepare just in case global warming is something that could actually take effect.
Things like that might deserve a second glance.
